Hi, my name is Nick Freeman, and I help sell-side institutions and trading technology firms build, implement and optimise the systems that power equity trading and execution.
My career in capital markets spans over 35 years. I started on the trading floor as an equity trader and market maker at firms including Nikko Europe and Merrill Lynch, where I gained first-hand experience of the pressures, workflows and split-second decisions that define front-office life. That foundation has shaped everything I have done since — because when you have sat in the trader’s seat, you understand what technology needs to deliver and, just as importantly, what gets in the way.
I transitioned into technology in the late 1990s and have spent the past two and a half decades as a business analyst, project manager and product owner at some of the world’s leading investment banks, including HSBC, Bank of America Merrill Lynch, Mitsubishi UFJ Securities, and RBC Capital Markets. Along the way, I also spent eight years at Fidessa, one of the industry’s most widely adopted order management and execution platforms, giving me deep, inside-out knowledge of the systems that sit at the heart of equity trading.
I work with investment banks, broker-dealers and fintech vendors to solve the practical challenges of trading technology. My advisory services cover:
Guiding firms through the evaluation, procurement and deployment of order management systems, drawing on hands-on experience with platforms including Fidessa, Ullink, TBricks and Iress.
Streamlining high-touch, low-touch, algorithmic and programme trading workflows to reduce complexity, eliminate duplication and improve operational efficiency.
Designing and delivering exchange, broker and trading network connectivity using FIX, XML and proprietary APIs across global markets.
Translating regulatory requirements such as MiFID II and Brexit-driven entity restructuring into concrete technology changes across the trading stack.
Providing hands-on product ownership to ensure trading systems reliably support day-to-day operations and evolve with the business.
My experience spans equities, futures, options, convertible bonds, warrants, ETFs, CFDs, equity swaps, and spread bets. I have worked across high-touch and low-touch workflows, DMA, algorithmic and programme trading, market making, and proprietary trading. On the operational side, I cover trade aggregation, block confirmation and allocation, reconciliation, trade surveillance, position management and regulatory reporting.
Over my career, I have delivered projects across the full front-to-back trade lifecycle for some of the most demanding institutions in the industry. Highlights include:
If you are looking for someone who combines genuine trading floor experience with deep technical knowledge of the systems that support it, I would welcome a conversation. Whether you are selecting a new OMS, rethinking your trading workflows, expanding into new markets or navigating regulatory change, I can help you cut through the complexity and deliver results.
